Transport Ships

Transport, cargoes and trade are a forgotten aspect of naval warfare. Transport ships did not carry guns or have great tales told about them and their dashing officers and crew, but they were the reason for countries to have a navy in the first place. Overseas trade was an important economic feature of all governments and trade routes, shipping lanes, ports and harbours were strategically important. A large and powerful navy could protect trade and secure massive economies, a jealously guarded asset and the cause of many wars to take from an enemy or keep safe from them.
